The boy, surnamed Miao, left his home in Xuanwei on June 29 after being beaten by his father, Yunnan.cn reports.

He planned to travel 800 kilometers to the city of Chongqing, but only managed a respectable 100 kilometers before being picked up by police in the Yunnan city of Zhaotong on July 23.

Along the way he kept a journal documenting how he foraged for food, ate scraps and even cooked a snake over a fire. He also wrote of collecting plastic bottles to earn enough money to buy some buns and a popsicle, but says he never stole.

Miao says he slept on a pile of wet leaves on his first night and caught a fever, but managed to cure himself by eating wild berries.

When he was taken back to his family by police, Miao’s father promised to never beat him again. Miao in turn promised never to run away again.

That's an impressive feat for a 10 yr. old. He'd make a good special forces operator if he chooses that route later in life.

That's just over 4 km a day. To put that in perspective, my 95 year old grandmother walks 5 km a day.
