A young foreign man was stopped by police in Dongyang for riding his bike on the highway. Alek, a man from Azerbaijan, was traveling in Dongyang. He was intercepted on the highway by traffic police on the afternoon on May 28.
Alek told police that this was his first visit to China and that he was trying to visit a well-known outlet store in Dongyang. He had used his mobile phone to get directions, only to accidentally wind up on the highway.
“In China, bicycles are not allowed in the high-speed expressway- it is very dangerous,” said police. Police helped Alek contact his Chinese friends, who came to pick him up and thanked the police.
Traffic police reminded cyclists to pay attention when looking at mobile navigation and avoid high-speed expressways.

He should have been fined or some sort of punishment. The other traffic could have slowed down.

At least this time we highlighted the courteous behavior of the expat, rather than highlight a very small minority of people who are up to no good in any country they'd be in, much less China. He realized his error and was grateful for being able to get through it. Still, I do not see why this is big news. Locals also do this every single day. Why last week I read news about someone who drove their car into a river or lake due to giving too much attention to the GPS rather than watching the road ahead.

Is he suicidal?! I don't feel safe in Chinese freeways in a car, let alone on a bike!
