Tencent’s Pony Ma Plans to Donate $2 Billion to Charity

Tencent CEO Pony Ma announced today that he plans to donate 100 million shares of Tencent stock worth more than $2 billion to the company’s charitable foundation. The money will go to supporting welfare projects in Mainland China including health care, education, and environmental protection.

The Tencent Foundation was founded in 2007 and was the first charitable foundation in China founded by an internet company. The charity works with NGOs and other charitable organizations.

Tencent’s platforms which include QQ, WeChat, and Tencent video and news services attract hundreds of millions of users daily. The company was established in 1998 in Shenzhen and was first listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2004.
