A young woman from Fangchenggang, Guangxi was sentenced to three years in prison and fined 8,000 Yuan for fraud related to the Tianjin port explosion. Yang Cailan had raised 96,576 Yuan from Netizens after falsely claiming that her father had died in the explosion. Yang’s white Samsung phone, which she used for her posts, was also confiscated when she was arrested.

Yang, 19 wrote a fake Weibo post claiming that she was scared because she had lost contact with her father who worked in the Tianjin port neighborhood. Her post got the attention of many users online.

She posted on Weibo again the same today saying that she still could not contact her father, and that she was worried as her mother had previously passed away. Later, she posted a third post saying “Today I met him one last time in the hospital. I told him I would work hard next year and get admitted to a good university.” This resonated with Netizens: 3,739 users made donations to Yang totaling 96,576 Yuan.

I seem to remember reading elsewhere that the donations were returned. So the 8k is from her money.
