Seven human rights lawyers and associates from Fengrui law firm have formally charged by the Chinese government. Most of them were detained this past July. The seven people were charged with subversion of state power or the incitement of subversion of state power.

Firm founder Zhou Shifeng was one the four lawyers detained in July, along with 24 year old legal assistant Zhao Wei who has been nicknamed “Koala,” by Netizens.

The story has been reported in a number of Western media outlets. The articles general blame Chinese judicial authorities for targeting human rights lawyers and called the charges a form of “unprecedented repression.”

Chinese Netizens have come together in sympathy of Zhao Wei. Many have questioned how a 24 year old legal assistant could “incite the subversion of state power.”

It would be interesting to find out more about this story. How can a legal assistant - not even being a lawyer - commit the act of 'subversion of state authority'? Perhaps by questioning openly some of the less than savory acts of government officials? I am certain there is much more to this story, but not allowed to be published, lest it would be another act of subversion?

I normally try to be analytical, but not today. Imprisoning (that means sexual abuse and torture, by the way) young women with good hearts because they tried to stand up for the rights of poor people. XXXX the Chinese state.
