Woman Calls Police When Her Watermelon Isn't Sweet Enough

What's the strangest reason you've heard of for someone calling the police? A strange case has recently gone viral on Weibo after a woman called the police after buying a watermelon that was not to her liking.

Netizen @JingchaShuShu (OfficerShuShu) posted a photo taken of police records of a complaint. The complaint, dated August 7, was filed by a woman who turned to the police when the watermelon she purchased from a fruit stand, “was not sweet.”

So, how did police deal with this dispute? Police records show that the controversial watermelon was brought into the police station so that the conflict could be resolved. The funny thing is that a policeman put a comment on the report, “It has been found that the watermelon is indeed not sweet.” Netizens found the report to be adorable, yet kind of a waste of police time.

The police who solved the case are from Nanjing's Pukou District PSB.

The woman had purchased the watermelon from a farmer operating a fruit stand. She purchased the melon, and had cut it open to try a piece. When she realized the watermelon was not to her liking, she returned to the stand and asked for a refund. The farmer refused. The two began to argue and the woman reported him to the police.

“Taking into account that it was already late at night, being a farmer is not an easy job, and the dispute was such a small matter, police decided to just buy back the watermelon that had been cut open,” said Wang Qiang who heads a sub-bureau of Pukou PSB. “They settled the case by buying back the melon,” he concluded.

Should police actually respond to this kind of “alarm”? To the doubters, Wang said, “When someone sounds an alarm, they may not tell police the full story on the phone [for safety reasons]. Police need to go to the scene to understand why someone called.” He added that it is not uncommon for police to receive strange alarms.

The economy is faltering. But who would know it? Watermelon stories purify the mind.
