Buggin' Out: Environmental Group Protests Beijing Firefly Show

Chinese environmentalists are speaking out against a firefly show at a park in Beijing's Chaoyang district. Environmental group Nature University issued an open letter of protest saying that capturing too many wild fireflies causes ecological damage.

The exhibition features almost 50,000 fireflies spread out over an area of 2,000 square meters.

Environmental protection volunteer Zhu Xiangyu said that fireflies glow in order to attract mates. If enough of the original population of fireflies are captured, this will lead to a reduction in fireflies, which in turn may endanger the entire population.

Zhu added that changes in environment have a huge impact on firefly populations and can affect mating and reproduction.

Chaoyang police said that they have no right to stop the exhibition for environmental issues as the show itself is not considered unsafe. Show organizers replied that all of the fireflies used are farmed, not caught from the wild. Those who oppose the environmental group have questioned the group's motivations behind the protest.

Nature University is known for its protests against firefly shows around the country. Earlier this month, construction on a firefly theme park project in Shanghai was halted after a report by the group.
