A Shaanxi man in Fuzhou was cheated for a sky-high cab fee of 633 RMB as he caught a ride from the city’s southern train station to its northern bus terminal. When the man reported the situation to the police, it received a pretty robust response.
The police dispatched a large force which created checkpoints all around the city, and they successfully found the cab in question. They retraced the path of the cab with GPS which was probably to determine what the actual fare for the route should have been. The police are now investigating for further information about the reason behind the high cab fare.

If that happens to me and he didn't switch the meter on I would only pay what I estimate to be a "normal" fee and walk out. What is he going to do then? Beat me up? Yeah, I am waiting for him, 1.97m, 100kg of muscles, I am not afraid of some Chinese boy, he would eat the pavement, his head under my shoe in no time.

633rmb? You could travel up and back down the entire vertical length of China on a slow train for that price. That taxi driver has some nerve.

Sometimes, if the meter taxi driver doesn't switch on the meter I wait ten minutes then complain and start taking photo's of the taxi ID number by the dash, they usually switch the meter on at that point and I get the first ten minutes free......other times I'll have arrived in town on the last slow train, late at night and I get ripped off cos the meter taxi's won't even let me in without prearranging a triple rate price and I have no choice, especially in winter.

I live in Fuzhou. The cab drivers are all slimy cheats. If I want to take a cab from downtown Fuzhou to my school on the outskirts (about 40 minutes away) they'll try to make me pay up to 50 RMB more than the meter fare (60 RMB), citing the lack of fare's on the way back. I usually have to hail several different cabs before I find one who will do it for an extra 10 RMB. Fuzhou is full of extortionists who'll try to bleed foreigners dry (figuratively and literally). One more week and I'm out of this cesspool.

Yup, Fuzhou is infamous for business low lives. They literally dare lock the door until you sign the contract. Rest assure these scumbags can easily find returning passengers, there are well established pickup points the locals know about. When I was living in Shunde (a few hours drive from Guangzhou) I always went to these pickup points. Once you know the city you always find them. And I bargain, it depends on WHO is more anxious to go home, haha. Most of the time I got 50% off at least, sometimes as low as one-third. The guy probably ripped off the first passenger (the to-trip) already! You can do the same with your to-trip, using returning cabs and end up paying the price of a single trip for a round trip. It isn't always about money, the fun itself is also important. Anyway, congratulations for getting the hell out of the Fuzhou.
