"Better Than Nothing”:British Foreign Office Accepts Beijing Hong Kong Reforms
Jan 16, 2015 By eChinacities.com

The Foreign Office in Britain has made waves by saying that Beijing’s plans for electoral reform in Hong Kong- the entire reason behind the Occupy Central movement- are “better than nothing” according the South China Morning Post.

According to Asia-Pacific Director Steven Lille, the British Foreign Office believes that following Beijing’s framework whereby candidates for the Chief Executive of Hong Kong would be drawn from a pool of candidates pre-selected by Beijing, could still allow for a ‘genuine choice’ for Hong Kong people.

This is the most solid stance that the British Government has taken on the issue since it began, after months of sitting on the fence and drawing criticism from MP’s at home and analysts for ‘impotence’ during the proceedings.

The UK has had a rather rocky relationship with Beijing in recent years, particularly in 2012 after David Cameron’s visit to the Dalai Lama. Relations have since improved and Xi Jinping is scheduled to visit next year but Foreign Office minister Hugo Swire has denied that Britain is in any way ‘kowtowing’ to China’s demands.

This view isn’t shared however, by Hong Kong’s veteran pro-democracy advocate Martin Lee Chu-ming who told SCMP: “I think I can sum up the foreign policy of the British government in three words: more China trade”.

Apparently USD24 billion is a lot of money to the Brits. You pay for what you get. We'll all see what the Brits get further down the road.......www.china-briefing.com/news/2014/06/19/china-uk-sign-trade-deals-worth-us24-billion.html

The Brits just sold out on the free world. They are laughing and celebrating large at Zhongnanhai for sure. Will Taiwan be next?

Here's how the Chinese view it. China and Hong Kong are like brothers and sisters (or maybe better put it at parent and child relationship), it's a family matter. So don't you outside people come barging in thinking like you know what should be done. Mind your own business. Let them settle their problems themselves. It's a family matter. It's for them to figure out. Would you worry about other family's issues? I don't think so.

Expecting the Tories to actually give a shit is the biggest mistake one can make. They know they price of everything and the value of precisely fuck all.

This makes me ashamed to be British. For Gods sake grow a pair and insist on truly free elections just like Beijing agreed to in 97.
