A real estate developer has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for arranging the purchase and slaughter of three tigers, which he subsequently ate. 14 other people involved were fined and given sentences of five to six years.
The man, surnamed Xu, ate tigers as a ‘hobby’ according to Xinhua, and organised three trips last year for the express purpose of eating illegal tiger meat. A group of 15 people traveled to Leizhou in Guangdong, to watch tigers they had bought be killed and dismembered. The tigers’ meat, organs and bones were then cooked and prepared into a feast for the spectators.
Xu’s apartment was searched during the investigation and eight pounds of tiger meat and bones were seized alongside 16 geckos and a cobra.
Tigers are an endangered species worldwide; conservationists predict that there are only 3,000 tigers left now , cut down from 100,000 a hundred years ago through hunting and habitat destruction.
