Shanghai Flight Cancellations Lead to Spring Festival Level Crowds on Trains
Jul 23, 2014 By eChinacities.com

Crowds at Shanghai train stations swelled enormously after over 350 flights were delayed and cancelled on Monday and Tuesday from both Hongqiao and Pudong airports.

In Hongqiao airport’s terminal 2 alone, there was chaos as 22 flights to Xiamen, Qingdao, Beijing and Shenzhen were cancelled due to ‘airspace restrictions’ yesterday.

As delays and cancellations are set to continue until August 15, many passengers across the country will be forced to journey by train instead of airplane, leading to Spring Festival level crowding on trains. Many routes have already sold out, and there are already 310,000 people set to travel on Saturday.

Authorities have strongly recommended that anyone travelling during this period check with their flight carriers and if needs be, book trains as soon as possible.

The cancellations are due to bad weather, thunderstorms and flooding. Lets hope for good weather as i am due to fly.

Great! Carry out a full scale military exercise during the school break and close the air space and railways. Great planning, China!
