Fake Tiananmen Building Causes a Stir in Liaoning

For anyone in the northeast who doesn’t fancy making the trip down to Beijing, why not pay a visit to Liaoning’s Huludao City (Suizhong County to be precise) and check out their very own Shanzhai version of Tiananmen.

Although not as big and grandiose as the real thing, the architecture and design of the building is effectively the same as the one in Beijing, although Chairman Mao’s portrait is noticeably absent. Whether or not such sacrilegious replication is technically illegal or not is hard to say, though reportedly some departments are investigating.

It actually would have been a good idea if they had a made a faithful reproduction. The advantages of course being that you could go inside and touch everything and not just stare at the back of everyone's heads as they try to peek through the window of the Emperor's chamber. I actually would have had fun taking my picture on a reproduction Emperor's throne and seeing things like the Imperial wine cellar and the servant's quarters.
