Recently, many Beijingers reported having been called by an unknown number in the middle of the night and hearing the sounds of people crying and screaming on the other end of the line. Nothing unnerving about that, right?

One netizen said that on May 21, he received five separate calls from a random number. The first call featured the sound of a woman crying; the second was a baby crying, and the third was a little girl saying “Brother, help me,” after which the girl screamed.

In the past three years, many Beijingers have received similar calls with creepy voices, often from different numbers and usually in the middle of the night. Some say that the call sounds just like a recording. Upon calling the number back, callers are always met with the familiar “this number doesn’t exist” message.

Ceng Jianqiu, a professor at the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, believes that the caller of these mysterious messages uses a machine that alternates the number shown on the receiver’s phone each time they call. Ceng believes that the caller is trying to trick people into panicking.

Either that, or there’s a ghost in the machine…
