A review of Xiangyang, Hubei

In the15 months I have been teaching in China I have experienced many cities, afew, very much to my liking, and some that haven't been to my taste. I come from a big and very popular city in America known as Las Vegas. Coming from such a city one would naturally be disposed to metropolitan snobbery when exploring other places and learning of their attractions. One might also believe that places only on the level of Beijing or Shanghai would accommodate big city expectations... and this is true...partially.

Xiangyang is fantastic for me. It offers a quaint modern city feel amalgamated with an astonishing historical center located in the heart of China. In the 'Old City' one can peruse the dainty shops near the old city wall, a lovely re-built tribute to a once grandiose fortress. A lunch at one of the local restaurants,or even a traveling snack from a local street vendor is sure to please the appetite. At night the you can travel to one of the many bestir taverns on the famous "bar street". If you're looking for a more placid evening, a stroll along the alluring Han River, which offers glittering views of the New City and stunning Chinese architecture would be just the thing to put an excellent cap on the day.

For those looking for a taste of the contemporary, the "new city" might be what you're looking for. During the day the city offers everything from modern shopping at Wanda Plaza, to fanciful coffee houses that are sure to please. If you're hungry, then look no further, Xiangyang's new city offer some of the best Chinese food that the country has to offer. When the sun sets and it's time to paint the town red, this is the place to find some of the best booming nightclubs in the Hubei province....and don't worry, when you leave and you feel those hunger pangs hit at 2 in the morning, there's sure to be a meat vendor nearby to satiate that urge.

Essentially Xiangyang is a charming home away from home. It's a mid-sized city that packs a powerful punch, but is amazingly easy to grasp and become comfortable with. I am happy to say that choosing to teach here was an excellent move.
