He is right. I started as an ESL teacher with 0 experience, and was earning 15k after tax. By the time I left that job five years later, I was earning 20k. Not even close to what I am earning now, but it was a good start, allowed me to save up tons. I must point out, though, that I live in Beijing. In 2nd tier or lower cities, it might be less.
