It all depends on your life style. With my salary, l am able to save 15k a month. Lets say, yours salary is 15k, after tax in Shanghai. Rent is about 4k, left is 11k. Food/utilities/transport/etc, maybe 6k. That leaves 5k in saving per month. And if you do some side teaching, u can save more. If you lower ur lifestyle, u can save more. Don't eat out, don't dine in 5 star restaurant (aka foreign food), bike to work, if possible. Then you CAN save. People in Shanghai's avg salary is like 5k-6k.
