Score! Shanghai’s Best Sport Bars

Score! Shanghai’s Best Sport Bars
By Trey Archer , eChinacities.com

One of my favorite things about Shanghai is its internationalism. More specifically, I love walking into a sports bar at any time of the day or night and stumbling upon some random sporting event from some distant corner of the globe. Whether it’s a Brazilian MMA fight at 8:00 in the morning for breakfast, a Gaelic football tournament for lunch, or an Indian cricket match for dinner, the sport bars of Shanghai always have something going on.

1) Camel Sports Bar

The Camel is a cornerstone of Shanghai sports bars. In fact, its Puxi branch has been voted Shanghai’s Best Sports Bar since opening its doors. There is a movie-like screen in the middle that can either project one game or four separate games (the latter being the case for late night NFL), along with other flat screens TVs scattered around the venue… even in the urinals! You also have darts, a pool table, comfortable sofas, wide-open windows for sunny days, and spacious bar seating. Don’t forget about the extensive menu for pub grub (breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner options) and wide range of imported beers. Tuesday quiz nights start at 8:00 pm.

2) CagesView In Map

This is a new one to the Shanghai sports bar scene, and they’ve got quite a creative concept. Of course I can rave about their massive TV screens and delicious fare (they have thick and juicy burgers and wonderful hearty omelets for the early morning games), but what sets cages apart is… well, its cages! There are batting cages inside with pitching machines so you can get a few practice swings in between innings, but the arena can also be converted into a pitch for baseball and softball games. They also have a dodgeball, kickball and wiffleball league which is awesome! On another note, I’d definitely recommend this place for the Superbowl since you get free beer until the first points scored.

3) Windows ScoreboardView In Map

There are many Windows bars throughout Shanghai, each one concentrating in different themes. Scoreboard, as the name suggest, is their sports venue. This long established bar is one of the most popular ones amongst the expat community, and why shouldn’t it be with a standard American menu, cheap draft beers and drink specials and bar games (pool, darts, foosball and even beer pong)? As you can probably already tell by the description, Windows Scoreboard caters more the younger crowds, but it’s a nice place for people of all ages looking for a casual and inexpensive place to catch the big game along with a meal and few drinks.

4) Big Bamboo

Big Bamboo (Nanyang Lu branch) is nestled in the heart of Jing’an District. Its location circled by offices and large international hotels brings in a lot of local businessmen and out-of-towners on business trips, but that doesn’t take away from its laidback, casual, sporting attitude. They have a Western inspired menu with great Mexican options, and it goes without saying that they have an extensive beer list. It’s a great place to hang out with friends, play some darts and pool, and catch one of those “random sporting event from some distant corner of the globe” that I was speaking about in the intro.

5) Shanghai Brewery

Shanghai Brewery (Xuhui Branch) is a well-known spot for expats and locals alike. It’s good for sports, as you can catch big ticket events (especially European football) on their massive movie screen, but what they’re best known for is food and beer. They have a phenomenal menu with breakfast, American, Italian, German and Mexican fare (their enormous plate of nachos is highly recommended!), and they even craft their own beer (I personally love their IPAs). If you need a break from all the sports action, grab a seat outside and enjoy the wonderful terrace for some people watching in the French Concession. Happy hour starts at 4:00 pm on weekends and runs from 2:00-8:00 pm on weekdays.
