Police are Rewarding Beijingers for Reporting Drug Users

A club-goer in Beijing's Sanlitun bar district was arrested after club security reported his suspicious behavior. The security staff member who reported the man was awarded 5,000 Yuan from Beijing PSB's narcotics team.

“I noticed that the man was acting strangely,” said Wang Liang (pseudonym), a security staff member at a Worker's Stadium bar. On June 7, at 1:00 am, Wang noticed a stylish man acting especially excited in the bar. In a short period of time, the man made many trips to the bathroom.

“Police had given us anti-drug training, so I knew what to look for,” said Wang. He quietly followed the man into the bathroom. The man looked around the bathroom before entering the stall, not exactly normal behavior.

Wang waited until the man had left and searched the stall he had come out of. He uncovered a straw, some tin foil, and traces of white powder. Wang found the man in the bar, and reported him to the Sanlitun police.

Police rushed to the scene. The suspect was made to take a urine test, and tested positive for marijuana. He confessed to have taken drugs. The man was detained for 14 days by Chaoyang police as punishment.

Beijing hopes to incentivize employees to report others for drug abuse, and promote anti-drug brigades. Beijing public security has even published a guideline on incentives for reporting drug abuse and drug-related crimes. The PSB has officers available 24 hours to investigate drug-related tips.

Anti-drug police teams have also encouraged workplaces to educate their employees so that they can better recognize drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Beijing police will put out a joint effort across its different subsections to carry out inspections, and help educate and train employees on drugs, and drug-related behavior.

Police will also revoke licenses and close down entertainment venues that are deemed “places of drug addiction.” Employees may also be held responsible for drug activity found in their place of work.

From the article: "He (Security) uncovered a straw, some tin foil, and traces of white powder........The suspect was made to take a urine test, and tested positive for marijuana." LoL! White powder marijuana sniffed through a straw! #3 on my to-do-list when I visit Beijing. Police are training and paying civilians to be snitches for marijuana use....talk about waste of resources. 14 day "detention," I wonder how much that cost the taxpayer.

Tobacco is legal because it's easy for governments to control and tax the production. While weed will grow anywhere so anyone can have some plants on their balcony for their own consumption, virtually impossible to tax. "If I can't make money out of it,no one can" mindset.
