The Ministry of Public Security reported on Monday that Chinese police had launched an investigation of drunk driving incidents during the Euro Cup from June 11 to July 11. During this period, 447,000 drivers were pulled over and inspected for drunk driving. 92,000 Chinese received DUIs during the Euro Cup. 12,000 of were classified as very intoxicated when tested.
There were five deaths in car accidents caused by drunk driving. The number of car accidents due to drunk driving fell by 48.1% compared to the same period last year, and the number of deaths fell by 52.3%.
Drunk drivers were caught in the early morning as well as in the evening. 30,000 DUIs were given from 22:00 to 6:00. 3,706 were caught driving from 6:00-9:00, still drunk from the previous night, an increase of 51% from the previous year.
