The Shanghai Zhabei Power Plant has been fined 40,000 RMB following residents’ complaints that it was emitting black smoke. Turns out the emissions were illegal, the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau announced yesterday.
Residents started complaining in early November when the smoke being emitted by the plant started smelling strange during the evenings. The residents live only 200 meters from the plant.
The plant was fined under a new regulation that was introduced in October which rules all black smoke illegal, regardless of its contents. Those who break the rules can expect to be fined between 10,000 and 50,000 RMB.
