Italian Tourist Fined in Wenzhou for Not Registering at the Police Station
Jun 30, 2016 By eChinacities.com

An Italian man visiting his wife in Wenzhou was fined 1,000 RMB and given a warning by Ouhai district police for failing to register at the police station upon his arrival in China.

The man arrived in China in late May on a tourist visa to visit his wife who was working in Wenzhou. He stayed in China for two weeks without registering at the local police station.

In recent years, the number of foreign immigrants and transnational marriages have greatly increased. Residents often have visitors who come from outside of China. There have been two cases this June where foreigners have been caught not registering at a local police station. Chinese law stipulates that foreign visitors staying in apartments and homes must register within 24 hours at the police station.

Failing to register can result in a warning and a fine of up to 2,000 RMB. It may also affect your ability to apply for Chinese visas and residence permits in the future.

The silly thing is that your details are on the visa application yet aren't accessible by police. Same as every other bureaucracy in the world

Is there a chance there wasn't a warning in his native language? I mean I agree with TED, you do the research but how are you suppose to know? That law is very fine print. Next issue, if no one around you can help a new guy here find the police and tell him why he needs to go tot he police, well than he would never go or think about going to the police. So it's the system again. The borders should spell this out with huge signs. I don't blame anyone for not knowing when they first arrive.
