A Hangzhou man recently drowned while trying to see if his dog could swim. On June 20, a man named Zhang was drinking. On a whim, he decided to see if his pet Labrador could swim. The man took the dog on a walk and threw it into the river. The Lab swam to the shore, but the man slipped into the water and drowned.
Zhang was in his early 20s. He was originally from Hubei and had moved to Hangzhou in 2012 to work as an electrician. That evening, he had had some wine and was on a walk with his dog and girlfriend. When they were by a river, he climbed onto a pipe and dropped the dog into the water to see if it could swim. Zhang was wearing house slippers, and accidentally tripped and fell into the water while standing on the pipe.
The river was about 2 to 3 meters deep. Zhang’s girlfriend called an ambulance when he did not resurface. Rescue workers looked for Zhang for half an hour until they found him in the river. He was pulled out unconscious with no pulse. EMTs performed CPR on the way to the hospital but could not resuscitate him.
