Hotels in Beijing Charging High “Exam Rates” for Gaokao Takers

Good luck getting a hotel room in Beijing during the gaokao! In less than a week, more than 60,000 high school seniors will take the college entrance exam at 96 different testing spots. Many hotels near test sites are offering rooms for before the exam from 200 RMB to 2,000 RMB. Despite high prices, many rooms in the hotel have been booked for the week of the test. Due to the high number of students and their families booking hotel rooms, most hotels have canceled “hourly rate” reservations for the week.

The Hotel Xinhai Jinjiang is located 400 meters from Beijing No.24 Middle School. The hotel is close to 24 test sites, and is charging 868 RMB a night for a room the week of the test. The hotel has been completely booked up.

The nearby Hanting Express Hotel and 7 Days Inn are completely booked as well. “Recently we have had so many bookings, we cannot guarantee rooms to walk-ins,” said a staff member at the Hanting Express Hotel. A number of upscale hotels near test sites have canceled “hourly rate,” reservations for the week.

A parent of a high-schooler surnamed Wang said that his home was too far from the test city and he wanted a place for his son to rest during the noon break. Wang wanted to book a part-time room at an hourly rate but could not find a hotel offering this service. “I spent more than 1,000 RMB to book a room for the whole day,” he said.

Wang said he was worried about getting stuck in traffic jams on either or both test days. He ended up spending more than 2,000 RMB a night to book a hotel in Zhongguancun for his son. “This is let him eat well, have a good rest, and have fun. It is all we can do as parents,” he said.
