A rumor was spread online yesterday that a female student from the British International School Shanghai (BISS) was pulled into a car by a suspect near the school’s Minhang, Puxi campus.

Police immediately opened a case after the rumor was reported.

Police learned that on May 24, the female student was returning home from school around five in the evening. She was walking near Xijiao Manor on Baole Road when someone in a black car waved her over. The female student did not get in the car, and the car drove away. Police confirmed through surveillance video that the driver did not get out of the car and the female student was not pulled into the car.

After further investigation, police tracked down the driver of the car, which turned out to be a black cab. The driver said that he had seen the student walking and thought that she was a passenger. He asked if she needed a ride, she said she did not, and he drove away.

Police have advised the public not to spread baseless rumors.

I wonder if this is the ideological counterpiece to the admittedly awful ending one Chinese student had in "evil" Germany the other day. "See, in China it's all peaceful." Notwithstanding the terrible atrocity in Germany, RIP, I wouldn't put it past the Chinese propaganda machine to produce something like this in return.

Glad the police followed up and everyone was safe. I'd rather they bother more people rather than sitting around doing nothing, like I mostly see the police doing.....
