Hong Kong Gang Arrested in Shenzhen for Money Laundering and Fraud
May 16, 2016 By eChinacities.com

A Hong Kong gang was arrested last week in Shenzhen after an investigation led by Shenzhen police. The gang members, led by a 56 year old Hong Kong man named Guo, were arrested for distributing fake Hong Kong permanent I.D. cards, money laundering, wire fraud, running an illegal business and other criminal activities.

Shenzhen police had marked Guo as a suspected earlier this year. Police set up a task force to carry out an investigation of Guo and his accomplices. On May 6, police arrested Guo in Shenzhen’s Luohu. Four other gang members—Zhou (male, 48, Hong Kong), Yang (male, 27, Guangdong), Hu (male, 42, Guangdong), and Xu (male, 45, Guangdong)—were also arrested. Police seized 815 fake Hong Kong permanent I.D. cards, mobile phones, phone cards, bank cards, and online banking account information.

Guo has a criminal record in Hong Kong for fraud, using a false identity, and securities fraud. One of the gang members, Zhou, is a known member of a Hong Kong triad and was previously arrested for possession, drug trafficking, theft, and illegal gambling.

Guo said he has received long-term funding from figures from Hong Kong’s opposition party. He said that his backers commissioned him to purchase drones in Shenzhen in an attempt to cause trouble for the central party.

The five suspects are currently under criminal detention in Shenzhen and the case is under investigation.
