China’s Millennial White-Collar Workers Earn Nearly 4000 RMB Per Month

O2O recruitment platform Xiangcao Zhaopin, Beijing & Shanghai’s Service Industry Human Resources Associations recently jointly issued the “Post-90s Entry-Level White Collar Workers Jobs Report.”

Chinese millennials now make up most of the nation’s entry-level white collar work force. The average monthly salary for young entry-level white collar workers is 3918 RMB. In Shanghai, low level white collar workers are paid the most, with average monthly salaries of 5980 RMB, and in Beijing they make 5570 RMB monthly.

The need for entry-level white collar workers in China continues to grow. The number of positions for low-level sales reps, customer service reps, administrators, and other entry-level office jobs has grown over the past two years. While 3918 RMB per month is not an especially high salary, it allows young Chinese in second-tier cities to be self-sufficient.

8% of the Chinese population earns under 2000 RMB per month and 26% earn between 2000 and 3000 RMB. 30% earn between 3000 and 4000 RMB, about 22.5% earn 4000 to 5000 RMB, and 13.55% earn more than 5000 RMB.

In the report, Chinese millennials are relatively rational about their white-collar positions. They are selective about which industries they work in, not just about starting salaries. 60% of young Chinese white-collar workers work in sales, admin, customer service in the IT and finance industries. Less than 1% of young Chinese want to work as secretaries, property managers, hotel lobby managers and cashiers.

Why are property prices so high if this is what the average worker makes? Thanks for making homes affordable for the average citizen.
