Man Robbed at Changchun Bathhouse, Owner Refuses Responsibility

A thief raided a man’s locker at a Changchun bathhouse, leaving only his underwear. Is the bathhouse responsible for the incident?

Last month, Mr. Yu visited a bathhouse near the intersection of West 5th Road and Yongchun Road in Changchun. When he returned to the locker room to get changed, he realized that all his belongings had been stolen, even his shirt and dress pants. “They even stole my socks, all they left behind was my underwear!” said Yu.

Yu said that he had been sure that he had locked his locker and had kept his key around his wrist the entire time. However, the locker door was open when he got out of the shower to leave.

He alerted the bathhouse owner and the police. “I was able to call my son to have him bring me clothes,” said Yu. Yu asked the owner to provide surveillance video but the owner said that system had been broken for the last three months. Police arrived and brought Yu to the station to record a statement.

“My ID card, driver’s license, two car keys, wallet, bank cards, and house keys were lost. I can’t say how much the clothes I lost were worth, but my wallet had 2,600 Yuan,” said Yu. He was most upset that he had lost the apartment card key to his son’s new apartment. Yu had just purchased the apartment for his son and will have to submit a request to the developer for a new key card. Getting a new key card is a tedious process, according to Yu.

The owner told the press that the robbery was not the bathhouses’ responsibility. However, Ji Xiang, a lawyer from Jilin’s Liu Hai Bo law firm thinks it is. Ji said that in the case, the thief violated criminal law, and the owner of the bathhouse is also responsible under China’s consumer protection law.
