A pair of Japanese students ran into one of China’s classic tourist scams this past week. A tea scam is when a seemingly friendly local on the street invites a foreign tourist for a meal and then hits them with a ridiculous bill.

Two Japanese students near Yu Garden were stopped by a man and two women who asked the students to take a picture of them. The three locals invited the Japanese students to have dinner with them. They took the students to Yu Garden Teahouse located at 229 Nanjing East Road. In typical tea scam fashion, the students received a bill for 2,000 Yuan at the end of the meal. When they refused, the locals forcibly took 1,000 Yuan from their wallets to pay the bill. The Japanese students reported the incident to Shanghai Huangpu Bund police.

Shanghai police accompanied the students to the Yu Garden Teahouse and forced the shop to refund them 1,000 Yuan. The so-called Yu Garden Teahouse is not registered to its actual location- the registered address is 33 Henan South Road in Huangpu. The name of the restaurant was printed on a sticker stuck to the wall.
