Bigger than Wal-Mart: Alibaba Now World’s Largest Retail Company
Apr 07, 2016 By eChinacities.com

Alibaba has surpassed Wal-Mart to become the world’s largest retail company. The company announced in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on April 5 that as of March 31, 2016, the end of the fiscal year, it had become the largest retail company in the world.

The International Business Times pointed out that although Alibaba has not announced its last quarter and full year earnings, the information provided in the regulatory documents clearly show that the company’s annual revenue has surpassed that of Wal-Mart. In the fiscal year 2015, Wal-Mart’s revenue was $482.1 billion.

Alibaba’s 2016 fiscal year revenue is expected to be approximately $490 million, $8 billion more than Wal-Mart’s revenue last year.

Alibaba released a separate statement that said that the company is responsible for 10% of all retail sales in China, and has directly created 15 million jobs.

While Alibaba earns more in retail sales, Wal-Mart is still valued slightly higher.
