Chinese Banana Companies Clash with Thai Locals over Resources, Pollution
Mar 31, 2016 By eChinacities.com

Locals in several countries in Thailand’s Chiang Rai province are dissatisfied with the practices of the massive Chinese banana companies that have set up shop there.

The Chinese companies have rented millions of square meters of land to grow bananas and export them back to China to sell. The companies have been using local river water for irrigation and have almost drained the resource. This has resulted in a water shortage and state of emergency for locals in the area.

Locals have also complained that the Chinese companies have taken land and jobs from Thai banana growers. The companies also use heavy pesticide on their fruit which has polluted local rivers.

During face-to-face negotiations, the Chinese companies agreed to drill wells for water instead of pumping it from the rivers.
