According to a report from The Citizen, two Chinese ivory poachers were caught last Saturday in Tanzania. They were each sentenced to 30 years in prison or a fine of 54.3 billion Tanzanian shillings (approximately 150 million Yuan), making this one of the most severe sentences for illegal poaching in Tanzania ever.
The Kisutu magistrate court in Tanzania reported that the two men, 31-year old Xu Fujie and 51-year old Huang Jin, illegally possessed over 706 elephant tusks, the heaviest of which weighed up to 1.8 tonnes (worth about 20 million yuan). It’s estimated that about 226 elephants died for those 706 tusks.
Public prosecutor Nchimbi told the press that about one quarter of all elephants ever killed in Tanzania were killed between 2010 to 2013.

Three tusks per elephant may be surprising, but a 1.8 tonne tusk is astonishing. Male African elephants' tusks rarely exceed 50 kg. nowadays.

thats strange, tanzania has a shoot on site policy for poachers...maybe cuz they were chinese ...but i prefer shot on site ...its a waste of jail food on these bast#$@s

In the ancient times, local emperors sentenced people to death by tying people's 4 limbs to a different horse and then whipping the horse to run away, thus causing a painful end to those guilty. Its in the films. I am wondering what would happen if Africans gave surviving elephants a chance to stomp, thrust their tusks, or rip apart said criminals. With the recent news of locals getting ridiculously tough on the "3 illegals" (work, residency, overstaying visas), especially citing an African community in a southern province, I sincerely doubt that these two guys could afford such a high fine and thus the punishment doesn't fit the crime. Its funny how a few Africans teaching English in their spare time to earn a few extra cookies is "taking away jobs from locals" who cannot possibly recreate the face of an expat, yet I am putting my money on same said locals soon having a fit of rage and face losing over the punishment for two people who did not give a rats bum about the animals they slaughtered for the sake of profit, given how they behaved when Egyptian and Italian historical relics were abused. Soon there will be news of foreigners in China doing stupid things and then visa policies will be tightened, followed by another round of checking at work places and residences, as well as a certain CCTV International Reporter making new posts about sweeping out the foreign trash.
