Online shopping websites like JD.com and Taobao are becoming increasingly popular ways to shop in China, but unsurprisingly they’ve also become popular avenues for scams and criminal activity. A recent study shows that over 70% of Chinese netizens have experienced being cheated while using online shopping.

On March 16, Hong Kong’s Oriental Daily News reported the results of a recent consumer survey, where it showed that the top three consumer complaints in Mainland China related to mobile phones, cars and online shopping. Most complaints for online shopping were concerning fake products.

The study provides one notable example of a consumer who spent over 14,000 Yuan on JD.com for a Louis Vuitton handbag only to discover that the bag was a counterfeit. When the consumer contacted JD.com’s customer service, she was told that there was nothing they could do.

The report also explains how on Taobao, if a product receives a significant number of complaints, it will in fact be taken off the site, but only for a few days before it can be added again. Consumers also complained that the quality of the products they receive often does not match the information on the site.

BUY CHEAP, BUY TWICE. Why would you try and buy legit products off Taobao when you know most are fake? If you want an LV bag, go to LV.

I bought a bike off Taobao, cost me 1,200 RMB. Awful mistake!

They can do this, they just cannot be bothered. If someone gats a fake LV or whatever that is no threat, but dissent is a whole different ball game.
