The lung cancer mortality rate for those over 40 years old in Hebei has risen 306%, according to the Hebei Cancer Institute’s Cancer Registry Office.

Institute professor He Yutong reported on Wednesday that cancer rates in Hebei have risen by 180%. The Institute’s calculations take into account factors related to the area’s aging population. The rate of lung cancer deaths in older Hebei residents has risen by 306%, and is the number one cause of cancer deaths in the province.

Previously, stomach cancer caused the highest number of cancer-related deaths in Hebei.

Lung cancer has been linked to smoking, occupational carcinogen exposure (including asbestos), air pollution, radiation, and poor diet. Air pollution has been listed as the number one cause of lung cancer in Hebei.

Hebei is known for having some of the worst air pollution in China. In a list of cities with the worst air quality in China, seven out of ten were located in Hebei.

In my opinion, it might just be the lesser of 2 difficult situations. One, control the population growth with governmental control. Two, no government control but population adjust through self control. Survival of the fittest, that's the law of nature.
