Runaway Brides: 16 Vietnamese Women Disappear from a Fujian Village
Feb 18, 2016 By eChinacities.com

Fujian villagers were shocked when a group of Vietnamese wives married to men in the town disappeared together on Tuesday. The women had been living with their Chinese husbands in Zhanshi village. Several of the women were pregnant at the time of their disappearance.

The quiet village was abuzz with the news of the exodus of the Vietnamese women. Villagers estimated that 16 or 17 women had run away.

Tuesday morning, Vietnamese women living in the village went out each said they were heading out to buy clothing or food, and then disappeared. Their husbands cannot reach them by phone, and soon realized that a number of the women had run away.

Most of the men that are married to the Vietnamese women are poor. Marrying a Chinese woman can cost hundreds of thousands of Yuan, and many families cannot afford it. Therefore, the men hire a matchmaker to set them up with a Vietnamese bride.

One man said that he had paid a matchmaker 60,000 Yuan to be set up with a Vietnamese woman, but had no actual wedding or marriage license. The matchmaker shut off her phone and disappeared along with the brides.

The Vietnamese women generally spoke Mandarin. The woman “married” the longest to a villager stayed for six months. The shortest marriage lasted three days.

The women’s husbands say that they do not know where their wives are from in Vietnam. Some of the men said they saw their wives ID card, but could not read the Vietnamese text. One man said that his wife had taken anything that could identity her along with her.

The men said that the Vietnamese women had generally been hard-working wives. There had been no prior signs that they were planning to flee.

One woman had left her husband a voicemail saying that she was sorry and that she would return in a month. Her message could either be a genuine apology, or a way to stop her husband from coming after her.

The villagers now suspect that the entire thing was a set up, and that the brides were fake and had been planning to flee together from the beginning. The incident has been reported to local police.

Yes but the last story was a different group of Vietnamese women in a different part of China. Your country is now reaping what it sowed. 30 million desperate farmers looking for non-existent wives. So in their desperation they pay for Vietnamese wives who want to quickly earn a few bucks, then disappear back home quickly when they find out how backwards their new husbands are.

I'm pretty sure bigamy is a crime in China.

Actually, fraud is a crime. And they weren't sold. Nowhere does it say the men bought brides. They paid a matchmaker to set them up. The women then ran away. These women conned men out of money, exploiting them.

What I'm implying is that women are human, and therefore morally fallible. Sometimes, some of them do bad things, like commit fraud. They could have been mistreated, but we don't know. They could have also been hard working. It could have been that the men were just saying nice things about the women, and they were lazy. It could have been that the women beat their husbands. It could have been that the husbands were abusive, or the wives were abusive, or any number of things. We don't know, and it is dangerous to just leap to that conclusion based on the "Women are good. Men are bad" worldview. What I'm implying would not lead to women being imprisoned for seeking divorce if a gift was received for arranging marriage. What I'm implying is that women could be punished by the law for committing fraud (as would men).

If they repeat the scam they will be. I doubt they're only going to do this once. But even if they don't, they haven't been divorced so as soon as they get married, they'll be breaking the law.
