Shanghai is serious about its Chinese New Year fireworks crackdown. For three days starting on February 15, Shanghai police and 300,000 volunteers will patrol the city’s street to discourage firework use.

Shanghai police stated that people caught lighting fireworks illegally will be fined. Those caught lighting fireworks illegally will have their names posted on the Shanghai PSB website. In addition, they will have to go to the police station with police in order to record their information. This could take several hours.

A representative from Shanghai’s fire department said that those purchasing fireworks for Chinese New Year will have to register with their identity cards and personal information. For fireworks purchased within the Outer Ring Expressway, the purchase information will also be sent to the local police station.

Even though I understand the reasons for implementing this ban, I felt sad that many weren't able to participate in traditional Chinese customs to bring in the new year.
