China Hopes to Have Largest Global Box Office Sales by 2017
Feb 06, 2016 By eChinacities.com

Chinese movie-goers spent 44 billion Yuan at the box office in 2015. The market has experienced substantial growth in the past few years: 617 million Chinese people spent 21.8 billion Yuan at the box office. In 2015, 1.26 billion Chinese bought movie tickets.

Average movie ticket prices in China have not increased much since 2010. In 2010, movie tickets were 36.20 Yuan and were 34.98 Yuan in 2015. In North America, movie ticket prices have risen from $7.94 to $8.34 in the same period. A survey from PWC in 2014 showed reported that 53% of North Americans have said that rising ticket prices is their main reason for not going to the movie theatre.

China’s current goal is to reach annual box office sales of 100 billion Yuan by 2018. In 2017, China hopes to overtake North America to become the largest market for movie ticket sales in the world.

It's not difficult to make such claims when they control the availability of the movie to the public. Last week was Spring Festival and I wanted to watch the new Star Wars movie with my wife. We decided to wait until we both had free time to see it. Since the movie came out in the beginning of January we figured that the movie would definitely continue well into the holidays. Of course we were wrong, many of the cinemas had taken the movie out of rotation Feb 8th just as the holiday started. That's a full month exposed to the public then immediately thrown away. I'm American and really wanted to share this strong cultural experience with my Chinese wife. Now we're stuck just watching it at home via download, a big disappointment for both of us.
