Swedish police have arrived in Thailand to investigate the disappearance of Hong Kong bookseller and Swedish national Gui Minhai. Swedish police and Thai officials visited Gui’s apartment at Silver Beach Condo in Pattaya, Thailand on Wednesday. Investigators spoke to the property manager and took some surveillance footage from the building.

Causeway Bay bookstore owner Gui Minhai disappeared in Thailand on October 17, 2015. He appeared on Chinese state television confessing to committing manslaughter while drunk driving 12 years ago. It is suspected that Gui was targeted for publishing political books in Hong Kong. He holds a Swedish passport and is legally a Swedish citizen.

Gui’s confession was aired on CCTV on December 17. However, his friend and daughter both deny that Gui would voluntarily surrender to the Guangxi police.

Thai police have reported that there are no exit records for Gui from Thailand to Guangxi. Swedish police will focus on the exit records or lack thereof to investigate whether Gui “surrendered” himself to the Chinese government or if he was kidnapped and brought into China against his will.
