Angry Employee Smokes Out Office with Chili Oil to Protest Withheld Pay

An angry employee decided to stir-fry chili oil in his boss’s office, filling the entire office with smoke after a work-related disagreement.

Wenzhou police was called to an office yesterday that was filled with smoke from frying the chili oil. The smoke made the office unbearable to be in: employees’ eyes stung and they could not stop sneezing.

The culprit was an employee named Ye, originally from Guizhou. Ye claimed that the company owed him 56,000 Yuan in back pay and asked for the money before Chinese New Year. Ye and the chairman of the company agreed that the company will pay out 20,000 Yuan before the New Year and the rest in April. The chairman later said that, Ye’s project manager refused to fulfill the agreement and continued to dodge his employee.

In a rage, Ye brought out chili oil, a portable stove, and a pan into the chairman’s office. All of the company’s employees quickly fled the office as the space filled with smoke.

Police mediated an agreement between Ye and his company. Ye and the chairman apologized to each other, and the company promised to pay Ye the 20,000 Yuan.

I've heard many stories, even from close friends, about companies not paying their employees the amount specified (or date specified) by contract. Why is this such a common occurrence? I guess most Chinese put up with it because they think they have to. It's great to see someone stand up for himself. There are many great things about this country. Unfortunately one of the worst is the way people do business here.

So a guy doesn't get paid, practices chemical warfare on his employers, gets paid. Why do I get the feeling a dangerous precedent has been set here?

I commend this guy. He did not set a busload of passengers on fire. He simply did something to disrupt the company's business and bring attention to a huge problem that is being ignored.
