Netizens Confused by Fake Real-Time Monitoring Noise Pollution Screen

A real-time noise monitoring screen in Laifeng, Enshi, Hubei went viral on the Chinese internet last week when locals found that the information had been permanently printed on. The printed information said that the noise levels were 65.1. Netizens asked jokingly, “How can a printed piece of cloth on a sign claim to be real-time monitoring?”

The screen is located in a busy intersection in a touristy part of town. “Why is there a fake noise monitoring screen? Is it a face-saving project?” confused local Netizens asked online.

This past Friday, the EPA explained the mystery behind the fake screen. The EPA said that the sign is not a face-saving project or vanity project. A real noise-monitoring screen will soon be put in place, but has not been delivered to the site. The empty frame looks ugly, so the EPA decided to cover it with a fake cloth screen to make it look better.
