Women’s Federation Reports Story on Hangzhou Man Abused by Wife
Dec 30, 2015 By eChinacities.com

Domestic violence is an increasingly serious concern in China. Head of the Hangzhou Women’s Federation women’s rights division Tao Tao recently shared an example of domestic violence with the Chinese press. Unexpectedly, the story details a case of a man abused by his wife. A college teacher, aged 30, often complained that he suffered physical abuse at home.

The college teacher said that his wife often hit him with bamboo hangers. She would beat him on the ribs, and beat him until he bled.

He said that fights with his wife happened, because he spent a lot of time at home, helping raise his four year old daughter. He would often have conflicts with his wife’s mother. When his wife came back from work, she would be angry and take her mother’s side.

“His wife is a nu hanzi (slang for tough woman)! She works as a design engineer and has a lot of pressure at work. When nagging her husband, she picked up a hanger and started to hit him on a whim.”

The college teacher was a frail man, and he did not know how to resist her. Over time, his wife stopped communicating with him and would just pick up the hanger and beat him whenever she was angry. He said that he also could not fight back because she was a woman.

The beatings lasted six months. His wife said that she was just venting and did not know how to communicate with him any other way. “I grew angrier when he did not resist. Of course, I regretting hitting him afterwards, but once I developed a habit, it just became something I did.”

The Hangzhou Municipal Women’s Federation received 798 calls between December 1, 2014 and November 30, 2015. 34 percent of the walls were reports of domestic violence.

Good on the Hangzhou Women's Federation for taking this approach. Too many groups try to paint this as a gender specific problem with only women being abused by men. It completely ignores cases where men are abused by women, or where people are abused by partners of the same sex. Sure it's great that you encourage women to come forward about being abused by men, but why do that at the cost of everyone else?

Why anyone (regardless of gender) would stay with someone (regardless of gender) when they are abusive is something that I will never understand. Abuse is abuse, and it is unacceptable.

Abuse is also psychologically addictive to a lot of people with low self esteem, especially when mixed with love.
