An 18 year old student named Ah Hong (pseudonym) fell off her fixed gear bike while riding down a steep hill near Wenzhou’s Luoshan Jingyuan and died.

Fixed gears bikes are single speed with no gears. Traditionally, they do not have hand breaks. Conventional fixed gear bikes with no hand breaks have been banned from a number of Chinese cities including Shenzhen, Shenyang, and Xiamen.

Ah Hong had traveled from Ningbo to Wenzhou this past Friday celebrate a friend’s birthday. On December 26, she and her friend went out cycling on Luoshan. Ah Hong rode her friend’s fixed gear bike, and her friend borrowed a regular bicycle. Ah Hong rode behind her friend, and fell off the road at a U-turn on the way down the mountain. She fell off a cliff on the side of the mountain, despite the 10 meter fence running along the side of the cliff.

Local police rushed to the scene. They realized that Ah Hong had not been wearing a helmet. Her friend confirmed that she had been riding a fixed gear bike, and that she had never been on one before. Her friend added that Ah Hong was not very fond of sports.
