Chinese-Made Hoverboards Face Patent Problems, Safety Concerns

Chinese domestically-made balance hoverboards are extremely popular right now. Hoverboards are both popular in China, and outside the nation. With more companies joining the market, hoverboards are more accessible and affordable for regular people.

However, despite the popularity of hoverboards, manufacturers face issues including the lack of patented technology, and inadequate safety performance. A few days ago, Amazon UK removed all hoverboards from its marketplace.

A large number of these sellers taken off Amazon UK were from China. This is a major loss for Chinese hoverboard suppliers and manufacturers. One news report said that a Chinese vendor complained that he did not receive any notification of this and that Amazon refunded a number of buyers automatically. He lost nearly 600,000 Yuan.

On December 12, Amazon had received a patent complaint from US hoverboard company Razor. The complaint called for Amazon to take down all hoverboards from their marketplace and freeze the sellers’ accounts for three months. Amazon sent hoverboard sellers a message that said if they wanted to continue to sell on the site they must meet two conditions. The companies must provide security-related security credentials, and have an attorney prove that the product does not infringe on any patents.

In addition, hoverboards can no longer be mailed to the United States because of new US Post Regulations. Singapore stated that their postal service will stop any hoverboards mailed to the states and contact law enforcement.

An Artesyn Embedded Technologies insider said that hoverboards were banned from Amazon because of patent reasons, and banned from export to the United States for safety reasons.

In the last two months, hoverboards have exploded in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Hong Kong due to issues with battery charging. 90 percent of hoverboards sold worldwide come from China. A number of hoverboards sold are imitations made in small factories and workshops in Shenzhen without strict quality control or safety tests.
