Alibaba Given Warning by US for Selling Counterfeit Goods

U.S. trade officials issued a warning to Chinese tech giant Alibaba on Thursday due to complaints that the company continues to sell counterfeit goods on its online market platform, Taobao.

The U.S. Trade Representative did not put Alibaba on its list of “notorious markets,” but issued a stern warning to the company. Alibaba said in a statement that it is committed to fighting counterfeits and will continue to monitor and make improvements to its platform.

Alibaba was previously removed from the agency’s blacklist of counterfeit markets in 2012, but the warning mentioned that the number of fakes in Alibaba’s marketplaces could harm the global retail market as the business expands in the United States.

Forbes published a cover story on Jack Ma and Alibaba this past November, calling Ma “unstoppable.” The article said that Jack Ma has built a two hundred billion dollar empire on top of takes, and no one can do anything about it. The world’s largest online retail platform has flooded the market with fake and shoddy products from brand-name manufacturers, and pressure from the US government can’t do anything. In the center of this is the fact that Alibaba is indestructible, and to a great extent, based on the sale of illegal counterfeit goods.

Kering, the French luxury goods company that owns Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, is suing Alibaba for trademark infringement and trafficking in counterfeits. In October, in an interview with Xinhua, Ma said that Alibaba is also a victim of counterfeit goods trafficking. Fakes are a problem for Alibaba, and the Chinese economy in general.

Ma said that Alibaba’s complaint rate is 1 in 860,000. If customers purchase a fake item they are able to return it and receive compensation. Shops selling fakes will also be shut down. These measures have been effective so far in helping to reduce the number of counterfeits.
