91 people are missing after a landslide in Shenzhen’s Guangming New District on Sunday. 33 buildings were destroyed in the disaster when a huge mound of construction waste collapsed at Hengtaiyu industrial park.

The mudslide caused a nearby section of the West-East natural gas pipeline to explode. 14 office buildings, two cafeterias, 13 low-rise buildings, and three dormitories were destroyed.

Firefighting and rescue teams from Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Huizhou, Foshan, Zhongshan, Zhaoqing, Zhuhai, Jiangmen, and Heyuan were deployed to the scene. 104 fire engines, 566 firefighters, 123 rescue workers, four unnamed drones and 30 rescue dogs assisted with rescue efforts. 14 people have been rescued from the rubble, all alive.

Two rounds of search-and-rescue have already been completed. Signs of life were detected in three different places and rescue efforts will continue.

After reading the cause of the disaster, my first thought is this could have been avoided. I'm sure everyone knows why. My second thought is how this resembles the beginning of the movie Idiocracy, where people become too stupid to properly dispose of their waste causing mountains of trash to finally avalanche. It's nice to see people rushing to help, which is opposite of the everyday non-disaster incident. A shame it takes something such as this to motivate help in this country. I hope they save as many as possible. It's a race against hunger, water and oxygen.

Yesterday it was 900 missing. Glad they could stretch it to 90. 3 persons missing per building. I'd comment further, but what's the point. Same story every time, and somewhere some lazy employees or their greedy employer are already busy cutting whatever corner will allow for the next disaster.
