Sanya Says No to Spring Festival Price-Gouging

Sanya Says No to Spring Festival Price-Gouging
Dec 15, 2015 By eChinacities.com

Sanya’s government implemented a few new regulations on hotel meal prices to try to control price gouging during the Spring Festival Holiday. Hainan is a popular destination for those looking to escape the cold during the Spring Festival week.

The regulations set a price ceiling for hotel rooms in Sanya at 5000 Yuan a day during the Spring Festival holiday. If high-end hotels charge more than this, they will be audited by the city’s tourism bureau. Rooms priced higher than 6000 Yuan must be approved by the Sanya municipal government.

Tourist buffets are also subject to regulation. Breakfast buffets cannot be more than 350 Yuan during the holiday season, and dinner cannot be more than 500 Yuan.

The surrounding countries also have rapid inflation during CNY because of the influx of Chinese tourists. I'm going to Myanmar at the end of January, which isn't exactly Chinese tourist central but there'll be enough there to make prices increase. Also, you are deluding yourself if you think developed countries don't take advantage of increased demand by rocketing prices. Try getting a flight to UK at Xmas or going somewhere with children during the summer/easter holidays, then you'll see what I mean.

5000 yuan per day ?????? how many Chinese peoples ( and foreigners also ) can pay this price for a hotel room while in China a person is working one month to earn 5000 RMB or they even earn less than this ???? I think this country is going crazy ! with that money you can go to Malaysia one week, including the flight ticket and hotel in this price !

Yep, scams. The customers are mostly corrupted CCP officials, their spouses and mistresses, their vacation paid by bribe-paying businesses and if not, civil servants squandering public money. The poor get to flaunt and brag about how expensive their country is to foreigners. A twisted, sick culture.

The-Final-Say

I went to Hainan this past Spring Festival and honestly speaking, it wasn't anything different than the rest of China except it's beaches were warmer in the winter. Some beaches were clean in the morning but once 9a.m. rolled around and half of the world's population decided it was time for swimming, you couldn't even lay a small shower towel on the sand without sitting on the feet of the neighbor next to you. The overcrowding is outrageous and the food is nothing to write home about. I was in a tour group, which was fairly inexpensive by Spring Festival standards, and when I was allowed to explore the surroundings at night, the cheapest meals were so overpriced that I decided to spend 20RMB for instant noodles, spicy beef jerky, and a cold SNOW beer. Even then, I had to walk through several snack shops before I found a beer at 5RMB, I remember one shop tried to charge like 20RMB for the same beer, closest to the hotel. I'll never forget the way this one restaurant staff's eyes lit up when they saw an international person walk into their establishment. They whisked me right over to China's most famous 350RMB minimum crab dish and it got worse from there. When I walked out without even drinking a beer, I feel like they thought they had lost a diamond ring. No offense to the locals who are proud of their "China version of Hawaii", which is it's not, Hainan during spring festival is a "must avoid" destination. In fact, I would not recommend any kind of travel outside of your city during that week if you don't want to spend outrageous prices for something that really isn't that interesting. Cities like Xian, Beijing when the pollution is not bad, Chengdu, and Chongqing have plenty to offer but know that the plane tickets and hotels will be gouging nomatter what. Stay home or go to Thailand, Boracay, or elsewhere and enjoy less people at better prices for a better value of the money spent. Spring Festival is really about family time and rest from work anyway.

Or back to your country if is near and convenable for you ... Why should you spend money in that week ? We are foreigners , not Chinese , so let Chinese spend money to their goverment who up this prices ! 5000 yuan for a hotel room , is sound over power of a Chinese person who only earn 3000-5000 in a month , most of them ! It is sad how you spent time there that time... Better avoid travel anywhere in holidays. I only had a holiday plan outside of the Chinese holidays, for example , I went to Hong Kong one week ( special for the beautiful beaches) , but before to start the Autumn festival , exactly one week before. When the Chinese holiday started, I was already in the city where I live . As a foreigner, I keep my celebrations , like Christmas, New Year , I really feel nothing when is their New Year, which is a story invented by their old culture... I don't believe in Monkeys, Sheeps or anything like this, so why should I celebrate their holiday ? And it is a pity that China DO NOT CELEBRATE WITH THE ALL WORLD at the same time. The year is starting in January, all countries have fireworks and celebration, only China no have .... What I like in Spring Festival week, in Beijing is soooo quiet and you can travel anywhere in the city, no many peoples , no many cars... Why should I go to Sanya where is so crowd, full of viruses and bacteria from all part of China ? ...

Still no reason to go to Hainan... You'll get a lot more bang for your buck in Thailand, Vietnam, etc. as well as friendlier services. Only reason to go to Hainan during holiday time is fear of foreignerland or inability to speak the language called foreignlanguage.
