Millions in Damages: Fuzhou Airport Firefighters Sprayed Wrong Plane with Foam

Fuzhou airport firefighters sprayed the wrong plane with foam when the engine of an Air China craft caught fire on December 10. Air China Flight CA 1822 had originally reported a problem with a right-side engine. By the time the firefighters arrived four minutes later, the engine had already been switched off. Nearby, a Fuzhou Airlines craft of the same model had an exhaust fume coming from the tail. The firefighters mixed the planes up and sprayed both engines of the second plane with foam, causing 120 million Yuan ($20 million) worth of damage.

Eight fire trucks rushed to the scene when Air China flight CA1822 reported engine sparks as it crossed the runway. The engines were shut off. Firefighters, seeing no fire, confused the flight with Fuzhou Airlines flight FU6577. After the incident the Fuzhou Airport runway was closed for one hour and 40 minutes. 24 flights were delayed, and six arrivals had to be sent to a nearby airport.

Fuzhou Airlines later posted on Weibo that the Fuzhou Airlines craft was towed back, the passengers were taken off, and the engines were tested, cleaned and checked. However, due to the foam, the twin-engine on the plane will have to be replaced. The repairs will be finished by December 17 and the plane will be put into operation on December 18.
