Chinese Graduate Opens Beijing Jianbing Pancake Stall in NYC

Chinese Graduate Opens Beijing Jianbing Pancake Stall in NYC

Chinese snacks, from Shanghai-style dumplings to Xi’an roujiamo, have recently become popular in New York City. Beijing jianbing pancakes are a new favorite. A young Chinese graduate named Yolanda who studied Art History and Business in the US has opened up a successful jianbing stand in NYC and sells up to 200 pancakes per day.

Jianbing pancakes are traditionally cooked up in Beijing street stalls. The pancakes comes with eggs, chopped green onions, sweet sauce, chili oil, and a homemade cracker. They can be also made with meat floss or sausage.

Yolanda said that the stand is doing quite well, and the sidewalk around the stall is often jammed with people waiting for the pancakes.

When Yolanda started selling pancakes after graduation, a number of her friends were shocked. “Some of my friends were surprised when they head. They wondered why I had gone to university for so many years to sell pancakes.”

Yolanda’s Manhattan stall has only been open for two months but is already quite popular. Guo, who moved from Beijing to the United States 10 years ago, said that he rushed to buy one when he first heard about the stand. “I remember eating this as a child. Of course, it is still good.”

Now Beijingers in New York have another way to cure their homesickness. Yolanda also hopes that her jianbing will encourage New Yorkers to better understand Beijing food and culture.

Christ almighty, how insecure are Chinese people. How desperately they cling to the myth, and how ardently they keep telling themselves, that Western people are "learning about Chinese food and culture". --- LISTEN UP, NONGS: Western countries have food from everywhere. People eat what they want to eat. Cheap, oily Chinese food is already a fixture and isn't becoming more or less popular. --- Any belief ("people are interested in Chinese culture" for example) that needs to be reinforced through verbal repetition is a flimsy illusion.

It's only news because in a few years they will claim that that patch of pavement was once occupied by a Chinese and must be returned to the motherland immediately! And by not doing so the US government has hurt the feelings of the people of China.

The stall is often jammed with people waiting for pancakes but she only manages to sell two hundred a day. This story does not sound right. why is she on the street selling fast food rather than doing something related to her art history and business studies.

Which does your average layman value more? Art history or delicious pancakes? Not to criticise art history, it is just the way most people are.
