Police Drug Test 300 Students at Well-known Beijing Music School, Dozens Arrested
Nov 26, 2015 By eChinacities.com

Police raided Beijing Midi School of Music in Haidian District yesterday and drug tested 300 students. Dozens were arrested after the urine tests. Students reported seven or eight police cars being parked outside the school.

Zhang Fan, the head of Beijing Midi School of Music, confirmed to Tencent that over a dozen students were taken away. Zhang said that in his view, 18 to 20 year olds experiment with marijuana out of curiosity, and that law enforcement should respond with tolerance and forgiveness. He said that punishing students by detaining them is very wrong and shows no love or compassion. The school will not punish the students, but will respond with criticism and education.

A number of fans are concerned that the raid will affect this year’s Midi Music Festival. Zhang said that it “should not.” He sent reporters pictures of the Midi Music Festival’s “Audience Handbook,” and states that the festival stands against drug use. Zhang stressed that the Midi Music Festival advocates healthy living and not taking drugs. The “Audience Handbook” even has tips and ideas for healthy living. “The police are welcome to drug test at the festival,” Zhang said confidently.

If anyone would take the time to research cannabis (aka marijuana). Its history. How it was a threat to various industries, including the powerful DuPonts and Hersh families. That it is actually MUCH safer than alcohol consumption. That not one single life has died from "overdosing on smoking pot", etc. In addition, it could also be a threat to the powerful pharmaceutical industry. One should come to the logical conclusion that growing hemp has much more advantages than disadvantages. Seems I even read somewhere that the American founding fathers thought hemp was so important that they thought of making mandatory LAW that people must grow a certain amount of it on their lands...

The closest thing I have seen to this in the US pertains to torrenting in a dorm. My university keeps tabs on people that torrent using the school wifi. Then once every two months gives their information over to the authorities who slap them with fines >$10,000.

In order to arrest 30sth people for weed they turned 300 into CCP haters. Chinese math. It's like the leaders are trying to bring about the end of their own reign.

Woah! College students doing weed! Alert the Internets! Glad the cops put an end to that lawless menace. After all, the war on drugs is working out so well in the US.

btw, on second thought...how do you force a person to urinate if they dont want to? I can see forcibly getting blood, or saliva from a person if you restrain them, but it seems to me trickier on getting urine...

Even that, Police cant raid a night club and make people pee in a cup, at the most they can make them empty their pockets and take it from there (in a normal country i mean). Poor kids..how can they grow up to be normal

This seems like it should be illegal...I mean, how can you just decide to drag in some random students and drug test them? It's a university, not a night club raid.

depends on the size of the school. 300 students is alot. they may have drug tested all enrolled students for all we know.

Why not start randomly testing university teachers too? Or firemen? Or ranking members of another type of "Party"!? That last one sounds fair...

Wow, forcibly making people do a urine test is draconian.

Draconian? I agree....but look at the USA! A lot of companies have drug testing at work! In my mind it's nobodies business what I put in my body as long as it doesn't affect my work or harm other people.

Perhaps but no man is an island and heavy addiction to opiates or to cannabis prevents almost always the individual from fulfilling his commitments and duties in the short, medium, and long run. Therefore, the government must intervene to protect the rights of those that have specific rights by contract or by family. Never mind public safety.

His or her duties to who? A government that does not represent them? Also, exactly how much... suspected... cannabis or even opiate consumption does it take to be forced into something by state thugs? Let alone at a music school... damn those trombone blowing troublemakers!

I am going to make it easier just for you and make up for your lack of either reading comprehension or interpretative ability by giving you an example. A head of a household and employee of a company falls into some serious addiction. You may think it is his business only but the fact is that the government -any government- or any institution that administers justice has the duty to prevent that man from failing to fulfill his obligation. It is pre-emptive contract compliance or pre-emptive family duty compliance. His duties are to his family and his employer not to the government.

How many cases of heads of the household have you heard of spiraling out of control do the cannabis? Any valid statistics on that? As well, the most basic function of any government is to protect people from other governments and other people. (As outlined by Hobbes in Leviathan) In a shame society like China or some other East Asian societies it might also be to protect people and their families from themselves, however, do you not acknowledge there is an enormous danger for the government taking over the responsibilities for a family? If something as innocuous as marijuana is considered a threat to a family falling off the fiscal cliff, what else on that slippery slope can be considered "unsafe" for your family? Or my family... or anyone's family... the answer becomes "anything the government wants." Right?
