Learning from the Earth: University in Sichuan Has Mandatory Farming Course
Nov 13, 2015 By eChinacities.com

A university of Sichuan has found a unique way to teach its students more about growing their own food. Jincheng College of Sichuan University has a compulsory 32 hour farming course for all of its students. The course has been mandatory for students since the college opened in 2005.

10,000 university students participate in the course every year, regardless of major. All students must complete the 32 hours (in 40 minute sessions) in order to graduate. Generally, freshman and sophomores participate in the course as a unit of credit.

The college has a 20 acre farm used for the course on campus. The vegetables in the farm are all grown organically, without any pesticide. The produce that comes from the farm is popular amongst teachers and local villagers.

There is nothing wrong with teaching students how to work. I actually applaud the university.
