60 Year old Shanghai Pickpocket Sent to Prison for Stealing 2 Yuan
Nov 12, 2015 By eChinacities.com

A nearly 60 year old Shanghai man was sentenced to three months in prison and fined 1,000 Yuan for stealing a wallet on a crowded city bus. When he was caught by plainclothes policemen at the scene, it was found that the wallet only had 2 Yuan in it.

In September, Liu got on a crowded 189 bus in Shanghai and swiped a wallet from a young man carrying a shoulder bag. Liu took the wallet as the bus pulled into the station and tried to exit the bus along with most of the crowd.

However, he had been being watched by plainclothes policemen, who grabbed him as he was preparing to leave. Liu admitted to stealing the wallet and handed it over to the police. The police summoned Wang, the wallet’s owner, who instantly recognized it. The wallet held Wang’s ID card, his mother’s ID card, a 1 Yuan banknote and a 1 Yuan coin.

Liu pleaded guilty to stealing the wallet in court today. The court said that despite the fact the wallet only had 2 Yuan in it, stealing it was still a crime. Liu was sentenced to three months in prison and fined 1,000 Yuan.

The guy hasn't been sentenced to jail for stealing 2 yuan as the title is fallaciously trying to inform us but for being a pickpocket and stealing a wallet with the obvious hope it contained much more. And most likely it wasn't his first time

Stealing is stealing regardless of the amount. Three months is an extremely light charge. Deserves a much longer sentence.

The-Final-Say

These thieves have caused many troubles. I don't care if they stole a tissue for wiping someone's nose, throw the book at them. It is time to make thieves fear this. I have to be very careful on public transportation and crowded places, anywhere there are others because to me everyone is a potential thief and because I am not Chinese, they think I am an easy target. Thankfully, I avoid stuff but my friends have suffered from this stuff so its no joke. 1000RMB fine is too little. The minimum fine for stealing should be 10000RMB, minimum. Heck, they punish foreigners way more for illegally working on the wrong visas, including those married to locals, and that only hurts themselves if they get caught. With all the thieves getting caught and paying fines, you'd think the police could have better salaries so they won't need a helping hand from the red pocket if the fines were more stiff. Thieves ruin lives, no mercy.

That sucks and im not gonna justify what the old man did but three months is a little too much of a punishment.

But you don't know how many years he has been doing this, I'm sure it wasn't his first time... He's probably got a fortune saved at home.

I think it's worse. Banks have insurance and it doesn't come out of an actual person's pocket.

Typical Chinese short sightedness. When their insurance rates go up, who ends up paying?

Who cares how much was in the wallet? The thief was trying to get his hands on as much as he could. Put him in prison.
